The promo materials state that Goodnight Nobody was ‘recorded with a Dylanesque approach.’ If you can get past the bad promo copy, the disc, Doiron’s third solo effort on endearing, edges into the category of decent. And yes it’s nice, but Dylanesque?

Doiron, who’s best known for her previous life as a bass player in Eric’s Trip, has settled into quiet, carefully sketched tunage on Goodnight Nobody. But though her voice is equal parts Cat Power and Neko Case, it alone, in all its plaintive languor, can’t make the album gel. Spare, lyric beauty is fine if you’re Dylan, but here it comes off mostly dull.

There’s beauty, to be sure. “Snow Falls in November,” “Dirty Feet” and “Dance All Night” are stunners, twangy and ominous, and almost a little gothic. But for a lot of the minutes of slow emotion in my umpteen listens of this disc, boredom crept in. Despairing boredom.

To come back to the Dylan homage like a needling politician, one can also find no comparison to be drawn in the category of lyrics. “Good night,” Goodnight Nobody’s closing track, has a building, Broken Social Sceney gait to it, and it may be the most successful song on the album. But guess what - it’s an instrumental.
